Here is stage two of our bathroom mini makeover. Our vanity has always been an after thought in this room (actually the whole room was an after thought!) and when we first moved in, the walls were a dirty cream colour with an Indian red trim. What was in this space was just a frame with plumbing pipes that had a curtain on it to try and dickie it up for the sale...it worked! The only thing I really cared about in this room was the original cast iron claw foot tub, and the size of the room.
So this cabinet had been 'fixed' up by my beloved Dad, who made these makeshift doors out of an old wardrobe that we had dismantled so we didn't have to bother with the curtains and we could child proof it for the boys. Dad also added shelves to make it more functional for us as a family. The top of the unit was as it was. we also added the shelf and the mirror my dad made as the one that was there was about 20cm round!!! No good for putting on your face!
Basically all I have done is make it cleaner, lighter and brighter by painting the doors again with the enamel paint. I also painted the top of the unit (which is a plywood). This unit will be totally replaced with probably a table or the old sideboard we have and it will have an above counter sink..or 2!

The mirror also got a few coats of white paint, as did the long mirror and I added new wooden handles to the doors. After adding some greenery in a grey jug I bought at The Vintage Rose (for those observant ones, yes it is the same as the one Mic bought me for Christmas, except smaller) and some candles, it has taken on a totally different feel.
I also added the ampersand that I bought some time ago from White Flower Farmhouse to the mix.
This is what you see when you enter the room.

Better, I am thinking...and no money involved! You can see our laundry to the left...oh yeah, that's what else I done today...
...I gave the laundry a mini makeover too!
This is what I started with, and it wasn't that bad as I had added shelves and painted the sink surround white as it was originally Indian Red!
Once it dried (about an hour or so), I added some items to the shelves that I use all the time and I was done.
It looks much better now and eventually this space will be enclosed behind doors so it looks like a big linen closet.
I love these little shelves and the big blue container was part of an Engagement gift from my eldest Sister. I keep our washing powder in here. The little mirror and the planter that's on the top shelf were second hand store finds by my Mum and I think they look good here for the time being.

So, what do you think of stage 2 of my 'No Cost Bathroom Makeover'?
I am hoping it will be done for real very soon, but for the time being it is such a brighter room...and just with lashings of white paint.

ness,
ReplyDeletei think you are fabulous.
for real.
look how lovely you are, the washing soap in a pretty container.
i thought that i was a stickler for everything being visually pleasing.
i will have to hang my head low in shame.
you have me beat.
big time!
xx
I think the room is fabulous if you don't do another thing. You have a wonderful way of putting together items that give life and beauty to a room. Very nice.
ReplyDeleteGood one Ness, looks great! A day's efforts well spent - it looks so fresh and lovely.
ReplyDeleteBet you're a bit pleased, and so you should be!!
Fabulous! jules
Looks great. I especially like the paned mirror above the vanity with the shelf.
ReplyDeleteHi Ness,
ReplyDeleteWell I must say everything looks great. Can't beat white, even though technically white is not a colour, you just can't beat it for purity and freshness. Love the little jug from The Vintage Rose. I noticed on the shelf above the washing machine, just in front of the wreath, a small bottle. I had a chuckle when I say that 'cause I have exactly the same one that I bought from The Vintage Rose a little while ago now...Anyway, great job. I've also used the b.i.n product. Great product, I had the original 1960's green paint in my pantry and ended up painting that Antique White USA. I must say it looks so much better now. Better go. Have a great day tomorrow.

ReplyDeleteHi Ness,

Your spruced up bathroom, laundry is very charming, inviting. Love, more than anything else, to see makeovers using what one has. Good job!
ReplyDeleteHi Ness!
ReplyDeleteI love your bathroom/ laundry room. It looks so cute! I especially love the shelves. It's great the way you have displayed such pretty items. That's the kind of stuff that makes a room go from average to amazing. I think shelves are a great place to create perfect little vignettes. The greens add such a nice pop too. You have a great sense of style. I just love the whole fresh white look...and that sink! It's great!! Way to go girl! I'll bet you're actually enjoying doing laundry these days:)
Have a wonderful day! See you soon.
XoXo
Gail
Lovely! You must be so pleased.
ReplyDeleteCharming.
ReplyDeleteIt looks as though it smells of lavender.
subtle changes, but the look is gigantic!! absolutely beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYou have a great eye for detail. Can you come and give my bathroom a makeover too please!!
ReplyDeleteOh Ness,
ReplyDeleteIt all looks brilliant.
Very Scandanavian.
Considering this is supposed to be a 'quick and temporary' makeover it looks much more than that.
You've done a great job. XXXX
It looks divine you are very very clever. One teeny suggestion - not sure how high the ceiling is but you could maybe get away with one or two more shelves above the washing machine, given the top ones have mainly decorative things? Might give you even more height illusion. Just a thought xoxo
ReplyDeleteIt looks great -- all cleaned up with just the right accents. Love the pitcher and blue jar! It almosts makes me want to go paint my basement laundry room, almost!! It is dark and dreary, but I know if I painted it all orange it would look so much better. But, oh, that would be quite a job...
ReplyDeleteWow - you've done a brilliant job! Just proves style doesn't cost a thing. I thought of you on Sunday as I was painting an old wardrobe with Zinsser - where would we be without this amazing product! Leigh
ReplyDeleteRenee
ReplyDeleteThank you, you are so sweet! I have never been into the big hand pump soap dispensers and nothing is nicer than real soap and a little ceramic dish.
Ness xx
Thanks Rene...that is my favorite thing to do, add the details.

Hi Janine,
ReplyDeleteI love the Vintage Rose for little touches. Amanda has a great eye and just visiting fills me with inspiration to do something. It is trying to leave without buying something that I sometimes find hard.
Glad you like the mini makeover.

Ness what an improvement for such little time and money. Especially love the mirror over the vanity painted white and love the flowers and the vase. It all just looks so simple and classic. You have done a fantastic job - good on you. Sandy x
ReplyDeleteI agree Gail. It is those touches that can make even an ugly room look great. I enjoyed waking up this morning to a sun drenched room. It bounced off the white everywhere and I am actually looking forward to doing the laundry today!!!

Sarah Elizabeth...I would love too. I have enjoyed getting my hands covered in paint again after my little break.=0)

hi Jane,
ReplyDeletesuggestions are fine. Our ceilings are 11 foot high and I would like some more shelves in there, but will wait until we do the real renovation to do that. Great idea though. Thanks,
Ness xx
Thanks Sandy. I cant believe how much brighter this space is now. Kicking myself for not doing it earlier!
ReplyDeleteNess xx
You're fantastic Ness - i love these makeovers you have done on a budget, they look soooo much better. Love the shelf and that jug of leaves (I am going to copy you LOL). Mel xxx
ReplyDeleteIt's really lovely.
ReplyDeleteOh Ness, you have done such a beautiful job on your bathroom (and laundry) so far. You are so clever and I adore your style:) Well done to you! Enjoy our 'new' rooms.-Tina xx
ReplyDeleteYou did it again! Youre a star!
ReplyDeleteHi Ness I am so glad I was able to come over anad catch up on all you have been up to. The bathroom makeover is just as spectacular as the kitchen one.
ReplyDeleteMakes it even more special when it has all been done as the old saying says -'on the smell of an oily rag'
Loving it
Alison
I think it looks great and no money... I am impressed.
ReplyDeleteMichelle
I just love it. We are doing our bathroom this year. Thanks for the inspiration. Love the look and feel of your space.
ReplyDeleteBravo Ness, both rooms look lovely :) What I admire about you and try to imitate is your way of being so creative on a shoestring budget. You need to write one of those books ;)
ReplyDeleteAnna xx
Fantastic Ness! It's reminiscent of the images I see on all the(many) scandanavian blogs that I follow. Absolutely love that style of decorating and trying to reproduce that in my own home. Keep up the great work.
ReplyDeleteAngex
Isn't white paint wonderful?!! It all looks so crisp and fresh. Great job!
ReplyDeletemarcie
The laundry looks so pretty. I don't think it needs to be enclosed. I love adding a bit of color and texture with baskets. The one in your laundry is perfect!
ReplyDeleteI also like what you've done in to the bathroom. It's amazing what a fresh coat of paint will do.

O love the jars in laundry.. the glass ones. Were they bought at a vintage shop ?
