Today's project...free stool

This little stool was basically free and was thrown in when I bought my $5.00 sideboard from my local haunt. I actually have two of these, but plan to cover them differently.
I have been planning to rescue them from the pitiful state they are in and seeing it is raining today thought I would make a start.
Please excuse the hideous carpet which is in my office. Hopefully it will be getting pulled up to make way for white floorboards soon. =0)

Firstly, I tore off the vinyl covering and carefully pried out the old upholstery tacks. Underneath I found this old wadding, which I have kept as it was in good condition still. The next step involved covering it in a natural canvas and give it a light sand.

This is from underneath the stool. The stools lid actually lifts to reveal a storage compartment and has a weird little box thing inside. This is the underside of the box which shows the makers label. I have kept this on because I think it adds a sense of history to it...even though it may not be overly old. I am thinking 70's.
I covered the top in this lovely hand screen printed linen called "Sumor in charcoal", by Australian Designers, Hollabee. I love the graphic nature of it and the fact it is in keeping with my colour scheme. The edging is bias binding and I recycled the old tacks.
Here is my little stool now. All that is left to do is give it a wipe over with bees wax to seal the wood. I am so happy with how it turned out and it only took an hour!!

  1. What a transformation. Love it and well done.

  2. Clever you, it looks very smart. Will sit well on your new flooring.

  3. Oooh, love it, Ness!

Your carpet is hideous? It didn't look too bad to me! I guess if it's wall-to-wall these days, everyone automatically thinks it's hideous :]

Great work. Can't wait to see the other one :)

  4. Jacci,
It is bad. When you see it in the flesh...maybe the photos make it look better!
The rest of the room is all nice and then you look down...
    Ness xx

  5. What a great makeover. The new fabric on top makes such a difference

  6. Oh it's just gorgeous Ness. You are so clever! A-M xx

  7. Wow! Lovely job! Did you say you were bringing it over for me? LOL

  8. Great transformation! It is amazing that some projects that I have been putting off for so long...actually take such little effort and time when I finally stop procrastinating and just do it! By the way, last year I got around to ripping up our old carpet and painting the floorboards white and I love it! It made a world of difference....(my carpet was really ugly!)
    Have a great day!
    :) Laura

  9. Have you recovered much furniture before because you have done a great job?!
Love the peonies on your blog, my fav. flower. We grew them in NZ but it's not cold enough here in Q'land

  10. Ness,
You are so talented!! It came out great!! Superb job!!

  11. Ness,

You are a real DIY woman! Fabulous! I do have a few stools to be redone! I wish you lived here in Belgium!

  12. This is beautiful. And you make it sound so simple but I know that was a lot of work. Totally worth it though it really really looks great. I can't wait to see the other one!

  13. Your little stool looks fabulous...and it only took an hour ?
    What a wonderful transformation. XXXX

  14. This looks fantastic. A perfect piece of recycling. Kate
