...apparently I have it!
I have just finished reading an article with the latest catch phrases for we, that love beautiful homes. Decorexia, is basically someone with an unhealthy obsession with how a home looks! Homedulgence, is dressing up for dinner and indulging in beautiful things at home..and finally Drift Shopping, which is when you buy things just for the fact that they are there..not me!
With the global crisis thing happening, it seems we are 'cocooning' and indulging in the simple things in life and going back to the simple beauty that surrounds us everyday. Cutting flowers and food from the garden and making do, or making better what you already have seems to be the new decorating wave, if you call it new. I am going to show you some photos of what I think is cocooning it...
Now, most of us already lived by this, especially if you have a classic look in your home and don't follow the latest decorating trends...Modern Rustic, some like to call it. Even the cleaning cupboards in every ones homes are getting a serious re-think, and we are paring back to what is natural, cheap and effective.
Interior finishes are even going through the a la natural phase. Eco friendly paint that doesn't smell is becoming a big seller, as well as natural pigment paints and finishes that mimic lime washes and stone (not that really faux one) and bringing back a traditional take on interiors. We are seeing a huge move towards natural palettes and materials...I love it!
Mixing traditional finishes, modern and vintage finds is something that has been happening for an age, but it seems, finally the rest of them are getting it. This Kitchen is beautiful. Imagine whipping up a Sunday roast, with veggies and herbs picked from your garden in here? Me too!
The look 'Modern Rustic', is a loose term and can be whatever you want really, but basically it is collected over time, not the newest thing to have (except grain sacks for me..hehe), not hurried and has a feel that someone totally loves this space, it is lived in and has blemishes here and there, and is not prissy perfect. Then there is also 'Elegant Rustic'!!! I think I am a mixture of the two...with some French and Scandinavian and Australian chucked in for flavour.
Does this all make sense?
I would love to here what style you think you are.

Hallo, your blog is beautiful and the pictures are very nice.Your shop is very pretty.I have a question? How many porto at Germany?Love greetings,Elke.
ReplyDeleteWell, I think I've been decorexic for the last decade or so! There's no hope for me now!! If I had to pick a style, I think my home is probably a mix of French & Australian (whatever that is). Sorry, I've never been that good at critical analysis. Love the pics in this post. Lee :)
ReplyDeleteMy name is Isa, and I'm a decorexic... LOL! Love it. My style is definitely modern rustic with a little french influence - Eclectic :) Organic - wood, metal, glass, stone ... cotton, silk and wool - forget synthetics!
ReplyDeleteI love this post - back to basics - it's nice to see the rest of the world latching on to it. It's very comforting and like you said, cocoon=like.
I'm loving that kitchen you featured. YUM!
xo Isa
Hi Ness
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures and all your handcrafted cushions are just gorgeous! I have no idea what my style is at the moment. Although I am building a very modern home, I have a collection of beautiful antiques that belong to my grandparents that are definately coming with me. So I suppose I am 'modern romantic' style. I think that really suits me. I love chandeliers mixed with new and antique furniture. This is going to be my real decorating challenge when I finally move into my new home.
Mrs B
My style is swedish/french with a traditional feel - Love the kitchen!
ReplyDeleteCan I be a blogaholic? LOL

my style is French /Australian.....items collected over a span of 24 years of marriage.....the collections of our furniture and items show our growth....just love those inspirational photos.
ReplyDeleteLovely post Ness. Gorgeous pictures as always and interesting theory. I'm definitely into cocooning, most certainly a decorexic and I think my style would possibly be called modern country!
ReplyDeleteI call it "Rustic Elegance". Where you can have people over and the men feel comfortable putting their feet up on the coffee table and the women say "Ahhh..." this is so beautiful. Linen, seagrass, old farm table cut down for a coffee table and silver.
ReplyDeleteOooh, love all those photos. Home scenes that are comforting, relaxed and reassuring.
ReplyDeleteI'm all about the mix...I love the term modern rustic and the images that come to mind whenever I hear it.
ReplyDeleteMy style is eclectic.
ReplyDeletedefinition: assorted (adj.) diverse, free, miscellaneous.
Things that have become me over 60 years.
Your beautiful cushions would fit right in.
Hello from Germany! First time I visit your bog.. Wonderful pictures!!
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day.
Sabine
Oh, I love these rooms. I guess I have "decorexia!"
ReplyDeleteI've been decorexic since I was a child! I'm coming full circle with my style-from country to over the top elegant(with tassles, trims, deep colors) to now a balance betweeen the two- leaning towards more the calm rustic with the touches of elegant.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous images! I love the wall of black and white photos. I'm working on that for my own home - thanks for the inspiring pic.
ReplyDeleteI think I have a severe case of decorexia too.... as a cocooner I love being at home (because of the decorexia of course!) with family and friends... It's actually been a nice change with friends to have dinners at our homes rather than going out to restaurants... much better quality time and so casual and enjoyable!
ReplyDeleteEach image in this post is just gorgeous!
I'd have decorexia if I could just step away from all the beautiful pictures in blogland and give my home the attention that it deserves. :D
ReplyDeleteLove them all- I guess I have it too! You have the most dreamy images Ness.
ReplyDeleteI think you already know that I'm afflicted by this disease! I love neutral, natural interiors. I want to use baskets in my kitchen like the ones in your image. They add so much warmth and texture.
ReplyDeleteThis is one obsession that I don't want to get rid of!
Have a wonderful day, Ness.

I really think you should write for a magazine Ness. You need to be an editor. You put things together so well and describle it perfect. I love these...
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the word Decorexia ... am now going to use it with gay abandon!
ReplyDeleteLoveing your inspiration photos! Love the open shelving top & bottom with the baskets for your wares.
ReplyDeleteLove these color palettes and the natural influence -- thanks for sharing such lovely pics.
ReplyDeleteBlessings.
Great post, that's what I'm talking about.
ReplyDeleteMy taste has been country, to modernist, to minimalist, to retro, to country/traditional, now I'm moving to eclectic, which suits me very well as I can mix all of these styles together :)
Such a wonderful post. Just love all pictures. i have eclectic taste... french, cottage, shabby vintage.. quite a mix but it's me. So glad I found your blog and Etsy shop... love it. Ordered a pillow (so excited) and now i see another one I would love... :)

I love modern rustic with a french influence! Gorgeous pictures! I think I may be decorexic!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what style I have but I lean toward a romantic Faded grandeur look. I am totally addicted to antique textiles and especially love antique French curtains so not so rustic there. But with all the inspirational blogs especially yours I have been drawn towards a more country French look and I am currently converting my garage as a retreat (I have three boys) in a more relaxed style.Love all your photos just keep them coming.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day
Lynette
Love the term decorexic! Probably am! Have never been good at defining our "style", but it is definitely a mixture of elements. We love a neutral palette of whites, grays, linens and love to add the french/scandinavian touch, maybe use a great old american harvest table. Add crusty old concrete and iron urns, old glass, fancy mirrors w/messed up mirroring, anything zinc, and crystal or italian metal or funky old chandeliers. Not cluttered, but definitely that come in plop down, put your feet up, and enjoy a glass of tea feel. As usual, a great post, Ness.

I am a mix of so many styles. It works though. I love old pieces, but nothing stuffy. These pictures are fabulous and that kitchen is dreamy.
ReplyDeleteI thought you would all suffer from this too....and yes, Gina you can be a blogaholic...I am!
ReplyDeleteNess xx
Noel, you are too kind,

ReplyDeleteYou know I love the neurtral look but I guess i am nuetral Nantucket/Swedish/Traditional - Is that even one?

What beautiful beautiful pictures.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful beautiful pictures.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful beautiful pictures.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful beautiful pictures.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, I love to look at all of the pictures you post, I have never left a comment, though. And I am definately decorexic! I have no idea what my style is--I like the warm woods of mission style, I like white painted furniture slightly distressed. I like some nantucket style according to a website I recently visited. (They had a style quiz.) I like neutrals and color...Now I just need someone to put it all together for me!
ReplyDeleteLynn
I think my style is contemporary classic. Sort of like Pottery Barn but a little homier or more "lived in".
ReplyDeleteI love that, I'm a decorexic! LOL
ReplyDeletexoxo,Cathleen
My husband was just reading your post over my shoulder and commented "I think you must be decorexic...better go and get that checked". So funny. Love your post.
ReplyDeletethat wall of black & white frames are stunning!
